More Baby Stuff
On Friday, I went for an ultrasound scan, just to make sure everything was okay after the hospital stay. All clear, and looking great. Samantha was curious to see "mama's baby" on the screen, and I loved watching his cute little profile, and his amazing little heart beat. What a miracle to see this little person grow. (I have pictures of him from the scan, but unfortunately they got left at a friend's house in Sammie's backpack yesterday... will post here soon.)
We found out our little boy now weighs about 6 pounds, 1 ounce! That's a big boy, considering he still has nearly 6 weeks to go to estimated arrival. (Maybe that's what makes me hope he'll come a little ahead of schedule.)
While I was being scanned, the technician couldn't get a great read on part of the heart. She seemed a little concerned, so I was getting a bit nervous, too. Conveniently, the fetal cardioligist technician just happened to be there right then, so he also took a quick scan to make sure everything was fine. That second scan of the heart was amazing! He got some really good close up shots of the heart chambers, all pumping so fast and perfectly. That was wonderful to watch! I love the feeling of knowing this little person is so developed, with all he'll need for life. Even though being pregnant is not exactly enjoyable, the reality of helping to make another little person does make it so exciting and worth it!
Still no name yet... we've ruled out Carlos, Rodrigo, and Raul, thanks to Brian's latest list of "maybes. " ha!
Oh, and I do still plan to put up a few more pictures and details from our Portugal trip, when I get time (hopefully before it's waaaay too old to share).

Labor?? Nope... false alarm
The full story, for those interested... After dinner yesterday evening I felt really "heavy" and "uncomfortable," and opted to sit on the couch watching television while Brian did the dishes (what a sweetheart!) By 9ish, I was getting more uncomfortable, with some weird, consistent pains in my back on the right side. Along with the backache, every 15 mins or so, I'd get a nice deep pain wrapping around the front of my stomach -- but only on one side. This was weird and quirky, but not extremely intense, except sometimes. Well, the backache continued until bedtime and made it impossible for me to sleep. Consequently it was impossible for Brian to sleep, too.
He got up and read some stuff about preterm labor. Symptoms include -- backache in the lower back, and radiating cramps around the abdomin. Sounded similar to what I was feeling so we called the hospital. They told us it'd probably be best to come in just to be safe. We waited awhile, the pains got worse, so we went in (dropped Samantha off at our very nice friends' house at midnight).
I had a lot of pain all the way to the hospital, but as soon as we arrived, it kind of started to taper off. The nurse took all my details, poked and prodded me and put me on a monitor. A doctor came and asked me a bunch of questions and did more poking and prodding. Our baby was a champ -- rolling somersaults inside me and giving a great heart beat reading on the monitor. They were really impressed, though I told them he was acting much more agitated than normal. I guess it's better to see a lively, agitated baby than a subdued baby with a week heart beat, right?
Well, by 2a.m. the cramps and backache stopped altogether. Nothing. No real explanation why I was in pain, or why it left. They decided to take some blood (six viles and three jabs! ouch!) and keep me in until morning just to make sure. Brian went home, and I went to a "recovery room" to sleep -- right across from the nursery. Did I sleep? Well, no, but I remembered vividly what it can be like to have a screaming newborn at all hours of the night. (sigh).
My doctor came at 7 a.m. and did a bit more poking and prodding, though there really was nothing to feel at all by that point. He released me and Brian came back to get me by 8 a.m. We slept until 10:30, then Brian went and collected Sammie and headed to work. It's been a normal day here, no pain, no unsual pregnancy stuff. It kind of makes me wonder what that was all about, anyway? Well, I'm glad the baby is fine and I'm not in labor. I guess maybe we just needed a little bit of drama and a sleepless night to remind us what we're in for?
Better safe than in labor at home, right??

Cute words from Sammie
Some of my favorite things Sammie says right now:
- chockie lupk (chocolate milk),
- Priprie(Christmas) there are several variations, of course -- Priprie presents, Priprie yights, Priprie tree, etc.;
- gwink (drink);
- go-urt (yogurt);
- gween car (she affectionately refers to our Honda as the green car ALL the time -- Abby's car is "Abby's wed car");
- yetz (yes -- just the cutest little lisp when she says it);
- up here (a complete synonym for "away". She has heard me say "let's put that up here" enough times, that she uses it whenever she wants to put something away. )
- Jay! (she still talks about Uncle Jay all the time. Even when we sing ABCs, she gets hung up on the 'J' and starts emphatically saying "Jay! Jay!" and has a hard time finishing the song.);
- Bawma (grandma OR grandpa -- she still can't get the "gr" sound, but she definitely knows who we're talking about when we say grandma or grandpa);
- prettia (Samantha's word for pretty, not sure where she got the "a" at the end, but it's prettia cute!);
- hookie (means pencil sharpener. We have no idea where she got that from, but we think it's pretty funny so we encourage it);
- six it (fix it, whenever one of her toys doesn't work just like she wants it to.);
- Jesus Christ, Amen (at the end of her prayers. She usually wants to end her prayers right AFTER she starts, and ends up saying Jesus' name several times throughout the prayer, thinking we're near the end, I presume);
- pooz (her word for spoon.) She actually has a series of words where she puts the s at the end, rather than the beginning, a bit of verbal dyslexia? -- tools (stool); tohbs (stove); nacks (snack); pots (spot);
- close it (she loves to open and close things, and right now is telling me to "close it" -- the computer.)
Bye for now!

Sammie at Home
Instead of posting more Portugal pictures right now, I wanted to add a few cute pictures of Samantha from the last couple of weeks. She's been so cute and fun, I just don't want to forget all her cuteness at this stage.
This next set of pictures should be titled "Brellies and Wellies." Last Saturday, we went to TescoXtra (kind of like a Super Wal-mart), and Samantha talked us into buying her a lovely pink umbrella (Brellie -- as she calls it, I think it's British -- surprise), and some really cute pink rain boots (Wellies, or Wellingtons, as they call them here). Sammie LOVES her new brellie and boots, and hardly lets them out of her sight for more than a few minutes. She took the umbrella to church with her Sunday, and has insisted on wearing her boots every day since we got them. Here are some pictures of her with her new toys...
Samantha has taken to finding new places to sleep-- or at least "pretend" to sleep. She gets her blanket and lays down under the desk in the office, in the crawl space by the couch, etc. A few days ago, I caught some cute pictures of her trying to sleep in her toy box that sits under our living room table. She had her blanket from her bed, and was trying to get comfy for a good sleep!
That's our girl! She's a lot of fun, always into something new and entertaining. We sure love her so much. How will it be to have number two?!? (Seven and a half weeks left! yay!)

Back from Portugal
That's all for now. I will only add that Brian took a bajillion-million MORE pictures than just these few, so, if you continue to stalk, you might eventually see:
a) comments on all the pictures I've just added
b) a lot more "artsy" pictures of cathedrals, castles, oceans, and architecture.
Hold tight!

Bodiam Castle and Hastings
After touring the castle, we got super HOT hot chocolate to go, and drove a few miles to the village of Battle, where the Battle of Hastings was fought by William the Conqueror in 1066. There's a huge Abby and battlefield, which we were hoping to tour. Unfortunately, we missed the last admission by like 10 seconds. Rats! But we took some nice photos and had fun peeking in some of the little shops in the town. That's all there is to tell for now, I guess. We leave for a spontaneous trip to Portugal early tomorrow morning... We figured this may be our last chance to travel Europe before this baby arrives (only ten weeks to go!). So, hopefully next week we'll have more fun stuff to share.
Happy Christmas Wishes!
Here are a few pictures of Samantha opening her presents... then I'll tell some of the finer details.
Reed and Alysa spent Christmas week with us, arriving on Sunday, 23rd. That was a crazy day! I was helping to organize the Christmas service for our church service, including playing the organ, doing a special piano piece, and accompanying several singing groups on the piano. Plus, we were doing a special Christmas craft activity with our Primary children, with lots of glitter, glue and paper stuffs that were my responsibility. Well, Saturday night we noticed Samantha's eyes were going bloodshot, with lots of fluid in them. After we put her to bed, I started researching her symptoms and guessed she might have conjunctivitis, or as we know it, "pink-eye."
Brian and I discussed, and decided I would drop him at his early church meeting and then take Samantha to the walk-in clinic before church. That turned out to be a not-so-good time, as they made us wait for nearly two hours at the clinic before telling us, yes, Samantha has pink-eye, and giving us a perscription for eye drops. Unfortunately, that meant I was late getting to church, and Samantha was contagious and had to go home. Brian met me at the car, and took Sam home while I went in to take over playing the music -- I was a nervous wreck. I guess it turned out okay, people said. But I was pretty distracted, with the Primary activity, Samantha being sick, and Reed and Alysa arriving while we were at church. Whew! Oh, and I had to cancel our Christmas Eve party and tell everyone at church... we had planned it at our house for the next day, but since Sam was contagious, we really didn't want other kids getting sick. That was a crazy day!
But from there, Christmas was all a nice, relaxing time! On Christmas Eve, we went out with Reed and Alysa to see some of London. We wanted to go to the concert service at St Paul's cathedral. We waited for nearly 40 minutes, but we didn't make it in. We got some nice pictures anyway...
Here we are on the bridge with St. Pauls in the far background. Another COLD night, but what do we expect in December, anyway?
We walked across the bridge and had dinner at a nice pizza place. Here Samantha enjoys showing off her cool pizza hat for Aunt Alysa...
Then we went home, ate chocolates and talked about Christmas memories before bed. We all slept in Christmas morning until 9ish, then took our time lounging before opening presents together. We had a nice late breakfast of pancakes and hashbrowns, then napped and played with our new presents for the afternoon. Dinner was nice -- ham and potatoes, etc., then more talking and feasting on chocolate, which seemed to be the order for the rest of the week.
Among the gifts I received was the DVD collection of the 7th season of West Wing. I had watched most of the 6th season during the spring, when Brian was working that REALLY rough stretch. Well, so Brian thought I'd enjoy seeing the 7th season, just to wrap it all up. I DID enjoy it! Together we watched the entire season between Christmas and New Years -- mostly between 10pm and 1am. Whew! Glad that's over. :) It was fun to be so indulgent with television, as that is probably more TV than either of us has watched in the last 6 months combined.
Anyway, we've been having a lovely time relaxing this past week, really enjoying the time Brian has had off, and enjoying being with Reed and Alysa as well.
Brian's work's Children's Christmas Party
Here Samantha holds her balloon that was a rabbit (she cleverly untied him and then had a long sword-like balloon instead). Yes, she's looking a little wary, waiting for her present from Santa.
It was a fun day, and we were happy to have gone to the party, as we've been invited three times now. :)
